Popular Reasons

Why Japanese Travellers Visit India

Buddhist Heritage & Pilgrimage

Japan has one of the world's largest Buddhist populations, and India is Buddhism's birthplace. Bodh Gaya (where the Buddha attained enlightenment), Sarnath (first teaching), Kushinagar (Parinirvana), and Lumbini nearby in Nepal draw thousands of Japanese pilgrims and spiritual travellers every year. Many Japanese Buddhist organisations maintain temples and guest houses in these sites.

Business & Industry

Japan is one of India's most important economic partners. Suzuki (Maruti), Toyota, Honda, Yamaha, Sony, Panasonic, and hundreds of Japanese companies have a significant presence across India. The Japan-India Special Strategic and Global Partnership drives ongoing investment in infrastructure, technology, and manufacturing, making the e-Business Visa essential for Japanese executives.

Culture, Yoga & Adventure

The Golden Triangle (Delhi-Agra-Jaipur), Kerala's backwaters, Goa's beaches, and Rajasthan's palaces are perennial favourites for Japanese travellers. Yoga retreats in Rishikesh and Mysore, Ayurveda treatments in Kerala, and Himalayan trekking in Ladakh and Sikkim are also popular. The 180-day max stay allows extended immersive visits that short-stay visas simply cannot accommodate.

Simple Process

How It Works

Three straightforward steps from form to eVisa

1

Fill Your Form

Our form is optimised for Japanese passport holders. We auto-detect your nationality and pre-fill relevant fields. Japanese passport numbers and name romanisation formats are handled correctly. Group bookings for up to 10 travellers are supported, ideal for business delegations and tour groups.

2

Upload Documents

Upload your Japanese passport bio page and a recent photo. Japanese passport photos are 35mm x 45mm (rectangular), but India requires 51mm x 51mm (2x2 inches, square format). Upload any photo you have and our team handles the resizing and formatting to India's exact specifications. No need to visit a photo booth for a new photo.

3

Expert Review & Receive Visa

A visa specialist reviews every detail, including verifying your romanised name matches your Japanese passport exactly. Your eVisa is delivered by email and is valid at all 32 designated airports, 6 seaports, and 2 land border crossings across India.

Deep Roots

Japan & India: A Unique Bond

Centuries of cultural connection, decades of investment

◯ Buddhist Heritage

Buddhism was born in India and flourished in Japan. Japanese Buddhist organisations maintain temples, rest houses, and meditation centres at all four major Buddhist pilgrimage sites in India: Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, Kushinagar, and Shravasti. For many Japanese travellers, a visit to these sacred places is a once-in-a-lifetime spiritual journey.

The Japanese government and private foundations have invested significantly in preserving and promoting Buddhist heritage in India, deepening ties that predate the modern nation states themselves.

🏭 Japanese Investment in India

Japan is one of India's top five foreign investors. Maruti Suzuki, India's largest passenger car manufacturer, is a Suzuki subsidiary. Toyota, Honda, and Yamaha have large manufacturing operations. The Japan-India Industrial Township and the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor are flagship infrastructure projects.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) finances major Indian infrastructure, including the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (bullet train) project, the Delhi Metro, and urban development across several states.

Insider Tips

India Travel Tips for Japanese Travellers

✈️ Getting There

ANA flies nonstop from Tokyo Narita (NRT) to Delhi in approximately 8 hours 30 minutes. JAL operates nonstop Narita to Bengaluru (approximately 7 hours 45 minutes), with service expanded to 5 flights per week in 2024. Air India also operates Delhi-Narita nonstops. A codeshare agreement between JAL and IndiGo (December 2024) connects 18 domestic Indian routes onward from Delhi and Bengaluru.

💳 Money & Payments

India uses Indian Rupee (INR). 1 JPY equals approximately 0.57 INR, meaning 10,000 JPY is roughly 5,700 INR. Visa and Mastercard work widely in cities. Carry cash for local markets, temple towns, and rural areas. Japan Credit Bureau (JCB) cards are accepted at major hotels and airports. International Visa and Mastercard debit cards work at most ATMs in Indian cities.

🏥 Health & Insurance

Japanese national health insurance (Kokumin Kenko Hoken) does NOT cover you in India. Private travel insurance is essential. Check the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (mofa.go.jp) for the latest India safety and travel advisory. No mandatory vaccinations are required, but Hepatitis A and Typhoid are recommended. Ensure standard vaccinations are current before departure.

🌡️ When to Go

October to March is peak season across most of India, with cool dry weather ideal for the Golden Triangle, Rajasthan, and Kerala. This overlaps with Japan's autumn and winter. April to June brings extreme heat. Monsoon (July-September) is excellent for Ladakh (stays dry) and lush Kerala. Golden Week (late April-early May) coincides with Indian summer heat, so plan accordingly.

What Japanese Travelers Say

I was planning a visit to the Buddhist sites in Bodh Gaya and Sarnath. I was concerned about making a mistake on the application form, as the official requirements can be quite specific. The team at visain.in reviewed my documents. The communication was very polite and professional. I received my e-Visa quickly, which allowed me to depart from Narita with complete confidence. Very reliable service.

We planned a short trip from Osaka to India. Our concern was timing because we applied close to our travel date, and I had read that approvals can sometimes take a few days depending on checks. I didn’t want to take any risk. Visain handled the process very efficiently. There was no confusion, no extra steps for us. We received our visas without delay.

Q&A

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. All Japanese passport holders need a visa to enter India. There is no visa-free arrangement between Japan and India. However, Japanese citizens are fully eligible for India's eVisa programme, which means you can apply entirely online without visiting the Indian Embassy in Tokyo or the Consulates in Osaka or Fukuoka. The eVisa is electronically linked to your passport number. Print the approval email and present it at immigration on arrival.

Japanese passport holders enjoy a special provision: a maximum stay of 180 days per visit on the e-Tourist Visa (1-year and 5-year options). This is one of the most generous stay allowances in India's eVisa programme, shared only with nationals of the USA, UK, and Canada. The 30-day e-Tourist Visa allows a maximum of 30 days with double entry. If you need to stay beyond 180 days, you would need to apply for a long-term visa through the Indian Embassy in Japan.

We offer three processing speeds: Express (48 hours), Priority (72 hours), and Standard (96 hours). All times are from receipt of a complete application. India is 3.5 hours behind Japan Standard Time (JST). For fastest results, apply in the morning Japan time, which reaches our India-based visa specialists during their working hours. Processing times are based on when your complete application is reviewed by our specialist team.

No. Japanese passport photos are 35mm x 45mm (rectangular), but India requires 51mm x 51mm (square, equivalent to 2x2 inches). If you submit a Japanese passport photo without resizing it will be rejected. With VisaIn.in, upload any photo you have and our team will resize and reformat it to India's exact specifications. No need to get new photos taken or visit a photo studio.

No. Japan uses Type A sockets (two flat parallel pins), but India uses Type C, Type D (three round pins in a triangle), and Type M sockets. A Japanese plug will not fit any Indian socket without an adaptor. We strongly recommend purchasing a universal travel adaptor before leaving Japan. These are readily available at electronics stores and airports in Japan, and are harder to find in smaller Indian towns. Note that India's standard voltage is 220-240V vs Japan's 100V, so check your device specifications before plugging in.

Refusal Protection is an optional paid add-on available at checkout. If your visa application is refused by the Indian government, this add-on refunds your service fee. It provides peace of mind against the rare event of an unexpected visa denial, particularly useful for first-time applicants or those applying on short notice.

Yes. ANA (All Nippon Airways) operates nonstop flights from Tokyo Narita (NRT) to Delhi in approximately 8 hours 30 minutes. Japan Airlines (JAL) flies nonstop from Narita to Bengaluru in approximately 7 hours 45 minutes, with the route expanded to 5 flights per week in 2024. Air India also operates Delhi-Narita nonstop service. A codeshare agreement between JAL and IndiGo (launched December 2024) connects 18 domestic Indian routes from Delhi and Bengaluru onward. ANA and Air India deepened their code-share in March 2025, adding further domestic connectivity on both sides.

India uses 220-240V at 50Hz. Japan uses 100V at 50-60Hz. Most modern Japanese electronics (laptops, phone chargers, cameras) are dual-voltage (100-240V) and will work fine with just a plug adaptor. Check the label on your device charger or power brick for "Input: 100-240V". Devices that are single-voltage (100V only), such as some older hairdryers, shavers, and rice cookers, will not work in India and may be damaged. A voltage converter would be needed, but for modern electronics it is rarely necessary.

Yes. All Buddhist pilgrimage sites in India including Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, Kushinagar, Shravasti, Rajgir, Sankassa, and Vaishali are fully accessible on an e-Tourist Visa. There are no special religious visa categories required for pilgrimage. The eVisa covers all standard tourism purposes including religious and spiritual visits. For Buddhist circuit tours, the 30-day e-Tourist Visa is usually sufficient. For extended stays or multi-visit annual pilgrimages, the 1-year multi-entry eVisa is ideal.

Yes. VisaIn.in supports group applications for up to 10 travellers in a single booking. Each traveller needs their own passport and photo, but you can manage all applications from one account and pay in one transaction. This is convenient for families, tour groups visiting Buddhist sites, and business delegations. Each person receives their own individual eVisa linked to their passport number.
