Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about applying for an India eVisa. If your question is not answered below, contact us at [email protected] and our team will be happy to help.
An India eVisa (electronic visa) is a digitally issued travel authorisation that allows foreign nationals to enter India without visiting an Indian embassy or consulate. The entire process from application to approval is completed online.
Here is how it works: you submit your application with your passport details, a digital photo, and any supporting documents. The Government of India reviews your application electronically and, once approved, sends the eVisa linked to your passport number via email. You print the approval letter and present it along with your passport at immigration when you arrive at one of India's designated eVisa-enabled airports or seaports. The immigration officer verifies the eVisa electronically and stamps your passport for entry.
India introduced the eVisa system in 2014 and has since expanded it to nationals from over 168 countries. It was designed to simplify and speed up the visa process, replacing the need for in-person appointments and lengthy paper-based applications.
e-Tourist Visa: For tourism, sightseeing, visiting friends and relatives, attending a casual business meeting, or participating in a short-term yoga programme. Available as a 30-day (single or double entry), 1-year (multiple entry), or 5-year (multiple entry) visa.
e-Business Visa: For attending business meetings, trade fairs, establishing a joint venture, recruiting staff, participating in technical or business workshops, or conducting B2B commercial activities. Available as a 1-year multiple-entry visa.
e-Medical Visa: For those seeking medical treatment at a recognised hospital or medical centre in India. Valid for 60 days from the date of arrival with triple entry.
e-Medical Attendant Visa: For up to two people accompanying an e-Medical Visa holder to India. Same validity as the e-Medical Visa.
e-Conference Visa: For delegates or attendees of a conference hosted by the Government of India or an Indian government-affiliated body. Single entry, valid for 30 days.
When you apply through VisaIn.in, our system helps you select the correct visa type based on your travel purpose so there is no confusion.
The key differences come down to how you apply, how long it takes, and what you receive:
An eVisa is applied for entirely online, typically processed within 48 to 96 hours, and delivered to your email as an electronic authorisation linked to your passport. There is no need to visit an embassy, send your passport by mail, or attend an interview. The eVisa is valid for tourism, business, medical, and conference purposes.
A regular (sticker) visa requires you to submit a paper application to an Indian embassy, consulate, or visa application centre (such as VFS Global or BLS International). You must hand over your physical passport, which can take 5 to 15 business days to process, and in some cases you may be called for an interview. The visa is physically stamped or affixed as a sticker inside your passport. Regular visas are necessary for purposes not covered by the eVisa, such as employment, long-term study, journalism, research, or diplomatic travel.
For most short-term travellers, the eVisa is the faster, simpler, and more convenient option. If you are unsure which type you need, contact us and we will advise you.
The number of entries depends on the type and duration of the eVisa you hold:
The 30-day e-Tourist Visa allows double entry. The 1-year and 5-year e-Tourist Visas allow multiple entries, you can enter and leave India as many times as you like during the visa validity period, subject to a maximum continuous stay of 90 days per visit for most nationalities (nationals of the USA, UK, Canada, and Japan are allowed up to 180 days per visit).
The e-Business Visa (1 year) is multiple entry. The e-Medical Visa allows up to three entries. The e-Conference Visa is single entry only.
No. India does not offer a visa on arrival for most nationalities. The eVisa, while applied for online before travel, is sometimes confused with visa on arrival, but they are not the same. You must apply for and receive your eVisa before you board your flight to India. Airlines will check your visa status at the time of boarding, and you will not be allowed to fly to India without a valid visa or approved eVisa.
The only exception is for nationals of Japan, South Korea, and the UAE, who were previously eligible for a limited visa-on-arrival scheme. However, even these travellers are now encouraged to use the eVisa system for a smoother experience.
Always apply for your eVisa well before your departure date. We recommend applying at least 5 to 7 days in advance.
Your maximum stay depends on the eVisa type:
With a 30-day e-Tourist Visa, you can stay for up to 30 consecutive days from the date of your first entry into India.
With a 1-year or 5-year e-Tourist Visa, you can make multiple visits, but each individual stay must not exceed 90 days for most nationalities. Nationals of the USA, UK, Canada, and Japan are permitted stays of up to 180 days per visit. These are continuous stay limits, you must exit India before the limit and can re-enter for a fresh stay.
The e-Business Visa follows the same 180-day continuous stay rule. The e-Medical Visa is valid for 60 days from the date of first arrival.
Overstaying your eVisa is a serious offence under Indian immigration law and can result in fines, detention, deportation, and future visa bans. If your plans change and you need to stay longer, you must apply for a visa extension through the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) before your permitted stay expires.
Citizens from 168 countries and territories are eligible to apply for the India eVisa. This includes nationals from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, the Netherlands, South Africa, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Spain, Italy, Brazil, New Zealand, Sweden, Norway, and many more.
Notable countries that are not eligible for the eVisa include Pakistan, Iraq, Sudan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh (with some exceptions for Bangladeshi nationals holding a valid US or UK visa). Chinese passport holders from Hong Kong and Macau may have different eligibility conditions.
Eligibility rules are set by the Government of India and can change without prior notice. VisaIn.in maintains an up-to-date eligibility checker on our website, simply enter your nationality to confirm whether you qualify.
Your passport must meet the following requirements to be eligible for an India eVisa:
Validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you plan to arrive in India. If your passport expires sooner, you will need to renew it before applying.
Type: It must be a standard (ordinary) passport. Diplomatic, service, and official passports have separate processes and are generally not eligible for the eVisa.
Blank pages: You should have at least 2 blank pages available for immigration stamps.
Machine-readable: Your passport must be machine-readable (MRP) with the two lines of coded text at the bottom of the bio-data page. Almost all passports issued after 2000 are machine-readable.
Condition: The passport must be in good condition with no significant damage, water stains, or torn pages. A damaged passport may be rejected.
During the application, you will need to upload a clear scan or photograph of your passport's bio-data page (the page with your photo and personal details).
India has specific photo requirements that differ from many countries' standard passport photo sizes. The required specifications are:
Size: 2 inches × 2 inches (51mm × 51mm), which is a square format. This is different from the rectangular passport photo used in countries like the UK (35mm × 45mm), Australia (35mm × 45mm), and most of Europe.
Background: Plain white background with no shadows.
Format: JPEG format, file size between 10 KB and 1 MB.
Face coverage: Your face should occupy 50–70% of the photo frame.
Expression: Neutral expression with mouth closed, both eyes open, looking directly at the camera.
Recency: The photo must be recent (taken within the last 6 months).
Photo rejection is one of the most common reasons for eVisa application delays. When you apply through us, our team will validates your photo dimensions and quality, and flags any issues before we submit your application to the government. So you don't have to worry about the photo.
No. The Government of India requires that your passport remains valid for a minimum of 6 months from your date of arrival in India. If your passport expires within 6 months of your intended travel date, your eVisa application will be rejected.
You must renew your passport first and then apply for the eVisa using your new passport details. Do not apply with your old passport hoping it will be processed before it expires, the system will automatically flag and reject applications that do not meet the 6-month validity rule.
If you have recently renewed your passport, make sure to use your new passport number on the eVisa application. Your eVisa will be linked to the passport number provided, and you must travel with that same passport.
Yes, dual citizens can apply for an India eVisa, but there is an important restriction: if one of your citizenships is Indian, you are not eligible for an eVisa. Indian citizens, including those who hold dual nationality with another country, must enter India on their Indian passport or apply for an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card.
If you hold two non-Indian passports (for example, British and Canadian), you can apply using either passport. We recommend applying with the passport you plan to use when travelling to India, as the eVisa is linked to the passport number.
Former Indian citizens who have renounced their Indian nationality and obtained citizenship of another country should apply for an OCI card for the most convenient long-term access to India. Alternatively, they can apply for an eVisa using their current foreign passport.
This is one of the more complex eligibility scenarios. Here is what you need to know:
Born in Pakistan: Applicants who were born in Pakistan or whose parents or grandparents were born in Pakistan are generally not eligible for the India eVisa, regardless of their current nationality. These applicants typically need to apply for a regular visa through the Indian embassy or consulate in their country of residence. Additional security clearance may be required, which can extend processing times significantly.
Born in Bangladesh: Bangladeshi passport holders are generally not eligible for the eVisa. However, Bangladeshi nationals who hold a valid visa or permanent residency from the United States, United Kingdom, or certain other countries may be eligible under specific conditions. The rules can vary and change frequently.
If you fall into either of these categories, we recommend contacting us at [email protected] before applying. Our team can advise you on the best route for your specific situation.
The process is simple and takes about 5 minutes:
Step 1: Start your application. Visit VisaIn.in and select your nationality and travel purpose. Our system will confirm your eligibility and show you the available eVisa options with pricing, select your processing speed (Express, Priority, or Standard)
Step 2: Fill in your details. Enter your personal information, passport details, and travel plans. Our guided form is designed to be clear and straightforward, no confusing government jargon.
Step 3: Upload your documents. Upload a digital photo and a scan of your passport bio-data page.
Step 4: Review and pay. Review your application summary, optionally add Refusal Protection, and complete your payment.
Step 5: Expert review. Our visa specialists review your entire application for errors, inconsistencies, and compliance before submitting it to the Government of India. If we spot an issue, we contact you to fix it before submission.
Step 6: Receive your eVisa. Once approved, your eVisa is emailed to you. Print it and travel.
Most applicants complete the application in about 5 minutes. Our form is streamlined to ask only the essential questions in plain language, unlike the official government portal which has 35+ fields and can take 45 to 60 minutes.
Before you start, have the following ready to save time: your passport, a recent square photo, your travel dates, and your accommodation details in India (hotel name and address). If you do not have your hotel booking yet, you can also purchase our Visa-ready hotel booking addon in the checkout page.
Yes. VisaIn.in allows you to save your progress and return to complete your application at any time. Your information is securely stored, and you can pick up right where you left off using the link sent to your email.
This is a significant advantage over the official government portal, where your session can expire quickly and unsaved work is lost.
After you complete payment, the following steps take place:
Expert review: Our visa specialists review your application for accuracy, completeness, and compliance. This includes checking your passport details, photo quality, and all form entries. If we detect any errors or issues, we contact you immediately to resolve them before submission.
Submission to government: Once your application passes our review, we submit it to the Government of India's eVisa processing system.
Processing: The Indian government reviews your application. Processing times vary based on the speed you selected: Express (48 hours), Priority (72 hours), or Standard (96 hours).
Status updates: You can check visa status in our status check page. Once the embassy makes a decision, you will receive an email from us as well.
Approval and delivery: Once approved, your eVisa is emailed to the address you provided. You can download it anytime through our website status check page.
Yes. You can submit a group India eVisa application through our website on behalf of another person, including your spouse, children, elderly parents, or any other family member. Each person requires their own details, as every traveller needs an individual eVisa linked to their own passport.
For children under 18: A parent or legal guardian must complete and submit the application on the child's behalf. The child must have their own passport with at least 6 months validity and their own qualifying photo.
It depends on where your application is in the process:
Before payment: You can go back and correct any errors freely before completing your purchase.
After payment, before our review: Contact us immediately at [email protected] with your application reference number and a description of the error. Our team will correct it during the expert review stage before submission to the government.
After submission to the government: Once your application has been submitted to the Government of India, changes are extremely difficult and in most cases not possible. Errors in your passport number, name spelling, date of birth, or nationality after submission may require you to cancel and resubmit a new application. This is why our expert review step exists, we catch the most common errors (name mismatches, passport number typos, incorrect photo dimensions) before they reach the government.
Processing times depend on the speed option you select at checkout:
Express: Approximately 48 hours from the time your reviewed application is submitted to the Government of India.
Priority: Approximately 72 hours from submission.
Standard: Approximately 96 hours from submission.
These timeframes are estimates based on typical government processing speeds and are not guaranteed. The actual time is determined by the Government of India and may vary depending on nationality, application volume, holiday periods, and security checks. We always recommend applying at least 5 to 7 days before your intended departure to allow for any unexpected delays.
All three processing speeds include the same expert review, error checking, and customer support from VisaIn.in. The difference is how quickly your application is processed by the government after we submit it:
Standard (96 hours): Best for travellers who are planning ahead and have at least a week before departure. This is the most affordable option.
Priority (72 hours): A faster option for travellers with confirmed plans who want quicker turnaround. Ideal when you have 4 to 5 days before travel.
Express (48 hours): The fastest available processing for urgent travel needs. Recommended when you need your visa within 2 to 3 days.
Yes. Our Express processing option targets a 48-hour turnaround from the time your application is submitted to the Government of India. This is the fastest processing speed currently available through the eVisa system.
If you have an emergency and need to travel to India extremely urgently (within 24 hours), the eVisa system may not be fast enough. In such cases, you may need to contact the nearest Indian embassy or consulate directly to explore emergency visa options, which can sometimes be processed same-day under exceptional circumstances (medical emergency, death in the family, etc.).
For all non-emergency travel, we recommend applying as early as possible. You can apply up to 120 days before your intended arrival date.
Several factors can cause processing delays beyond the estimated timeframe:
High application volume: During peak travel seasons (October to March) and around major Indian holidays (Diwali, Holi, Republic Day), the government receives significantly more applications, which can slow processing.
Nationality-based reviews: Applications from certain nationalities may undergo additional security screening, which adds time.
Incomplete or unclear information: If the government requires additional clarification on any part of your application, processing pauses until resolved.
Government holidays: Indian government offices observe numerous national and regional holidays throughout the year. Applications submitted just before a holiday period may experience delays.
Technical issues: Occasional downtime or technical issues with the government's eVisa system can temporarily slow processing.
If your application is taking longer than expected, contact us at [email protected] with your reference number and we will check the status and provide an update.
Your approved eVisa will be sent directly to the email address you provided during the application process. The email contains your Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) as a PDF attachment with your visa details, including your name, passport number, visa type, validity dates, and a unique ETA number.
You should print a copy of this approval letter and carry it with you when you travel. While immigration officers verify your eVisa electronically through their system, having a printed copy ensures a smooth entry process and serves as a backup in case of any technical issues at the immigration counter.
We also recommend saving a digital copy on your phone and in your email so it is easily accessible at all times. VisaIn.in stores your visa status in your application record, so you can also log in and download your ETA from our website.
VisaIn.in accepts a wide range of payment methods to accommodate travellers worldwide:
Credit and debit cards: Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.
Digital wallets: Apple Pay and Google Pay.
All payments are processed through secure, PCI-compliant payment gateways with full encryption. Your card details are never stored on our servers.
If you experience any issues with payment, contact us at [email protected] and we will help you find a solution.
Yes. The price displayed at checkout is the total and final amount you will pay. It includes the government visa fee, our service fee, and all payment processing charges. There are no hidden fees, no surprise charges, and nothing extra added after checkout.
If you choose to add optional Refusal Protection, that cost is clearly shown as a separate line item before you confirm payment.
Refusal Protection is an optional add-on that you can purchase at the time of your eVisa application. It acts as a safety net in the event that your visa is refused by the Government of India.
Here is how it works: if you purchased Refusal Protection and your visa application is subsequently refused, you are eligible for a full refund of the service/processing fee. Without Refusal Protection, the service fee is non-refundable regardless of the visa outcome.
What Refusal Protection covers: The service/processing fee, refunded in full.
What Refusal Protection does not cover: The government visa fee and payment processing charges, these are non-refundable in all circumstances.
Important conditions: Refusal Protection must be purchased before your application is submitted. It cannot be added after the fact. It does not apply if the visa refusal is caused by false, misleading, or incomplete information provided by the applicant.
We recommend Refusal Protection for first-time applicants or anyone who wants complete peace of mind.
Yes, but only if you cancel before we submit your application to the Government of India. Here is the breakdown:
Cancellation before submission: You will receive a refund of 70% of the service fee plus 100% of the government visa fee (since it has not yet been remitted). Payment processing charges are non-refundable.
Cancellation after submission: No refund is possible once the application has been submitted to the government. The government fee has been remitted and our service (review and submission) has been delivered.
To cancel, email [email protected] with your full name, application reference number, and the email address used during purchase. We recommend cancelling as early as possible to ensure your application has not yet been submitted.
Full details are available in our Refund Policy page.
If your India eVisa application is refused by the Government of India, the outcome depends on whether you purchased Refusal Protection:
With Refusal Protection: You are eligible for a full refund of the service/processing fee. The government visa fee is not refundable as it has been collected by the government.
Without Refusal Protection: No refund is issued for either the service fee or the government visa fee.
In both cases, you have the option to reapply. There is no penalty or ban on reapplying after a refusal. We recommend reviewing the reason for refusal (if provided) and correcting any issues before submitting a new application. Our team can help you assess what may have gone wrong, contact us at [email protected].
Common reasons for eVisa refusal include incorrect passport details, photos that do not meet specifications, inconsistent information between the application and passport, and security-related decisions by the government.
Yes. A previous eVisa rejection does not prevent you from applying again. There is no official penalty, waiting period, or blacklist for reapplying after a refusal through the eVisa system.
Before reapplying, take these steps:
Identify the reason for refusal: If the government provided a reason, address it in your new application. Common issues include photo non-compliance, passport number errors, and information mismatches.
Correct any mistakes: Ensure your new application has accurate and consistent information throughout.
Use VisaIn.in's expert review: Our team reviews every application before submission, catching the most common causes of rejection before they reach the government.
Each new application requires a separate payment, as it is processed as a fresh submission by the government.
We strongly recommend that you print your eVisa approval letter and carry a physical copy when you travel. While Indian immigration officers verify your eVisa electronically through their systems, a printed copy serves as an important backup and is routinely requested at the immigration counter.
Some airlines may also ask to see proof of your visa at check-in or boarding. Having a printed copy avoids any complications.
That said, it is also wise to keep a digital copy on your phone and stored in your email as an additional backup. In practice, carrying both a printed and digital copy gives you the best coverage for any situation.
The India eVisa is accepted at 28 designated airports and 5 designated seaports across the country. The major entry points include:
Airports: Delhi (DEL), Mumbai (BOM), Chennai (MAA), Kolkata (CCU), Bengaluru (BLR), Hyderabad (HYD), Kochi (COK), Goa (GOI), Ahmedabad (AMD), Jaipur (JAI), Lucknow (LKO), Amritsar (ATQ), Thiruvananthapuram (TRV), Tiruchirappalli (TRZ), Varanasi (VNS), Calicut (CCJ), Mangalore (IXE), Pune (PNQ), Nagpur (NAG), Coimbatore (CJB), Bagdogra (IXB), Guwahati (GAU), Chandigarh (IXC), Visakhapatnam (VTZ), Bhubaneswar (BBI), Port Blair (IXZ), Madurai (IXM), and Kannur (CNN).
Seaports: Mumbai, Goa (Mormugao), Mangalore, Kochi, and Chennai.
You can exit India from any authorised immigration checkpoint, not just eVisa-designated ones. The restriction applies only to your point of entry.
No. The India eVisa is currently not valid for entry through land borders. You can only enter India on an eVisa through one of the 28 designated airports or 5 designated seaports.
If you plan to enter India by land, for example, from Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, or Myanmar, you will need a regular (sticker) visa from an Indian embassy or consulate. This applies even if you hold a valid eVisa; you cannot use it at a land border crossing.
However, once you have entered India through a valid eVisa port of entry, you are free to travel to any land border crossing to exit the country.
The India eVisa is generally not extendable. If you wish to stay in India beyond the validity of your eVisa, you have two main options:
Apply for a new eVisa: You can apply for a fresh eVisa while still in India (provided your nationality is eligible), though you would typically need to exit and re-enter through a designated eVisa port of entry.
Apply for a visa extension through FRRO: In exceptional circumstances (medical emergencies, natural disasters, flight cancellations, or other situations beyond your control), you can approach the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) to request an extension or conversion of your visa status. This is done through the FRRO's online portal (indianfrro.gov.in) and is granted at their discretion.
Overstaying your eVisa without authorisation is a serious offence that can result in fines, detention, and future visa bans. Always plan your travel dates carefully and apply for the appropriate visa duration.
No. You cannot convert an e-Tourist Visa to an employment visa, student visa, or any other long-term visa category while inside India. Visa conversions within India are only permitted in very limited and exceptional circumstances, and a tourist visa is explicitly excluded from conversion.
If you need to work, study, volunteer for an extended period, or conduct activities not permitted under the tourist visa, you must:
Exit India, apply for the appropriate visa category (employment visa, student visa, etc.) through an Indian embassy or consulate abroad, and re-enter India on the new visa.
Violating the conditions of your tourist visa, such as taking up employment, is an offence under Indian immigration law and can result in deportation and future visa bans.
If you need an e-Business Visa for legitimate commercial activities, you can apply through VisaIn.in separately.
What you can do depends on how your dates have changed:
Travelling earlier than planned: If you are still within the eVisa validity window, you can enter India on your earlier date without any changes needed. Your eVisa is valid from the date shown on the approval, not your originally planned arrival date.
Travelling later than planned: If your new travel date still falls within the eVisa validity period, no action is needed. If your new date falls after the eVisa expires, you will need to apply for a new eVisa. The previous eVisa cannot be extended or revalidated.
Trip cancelled entirely: If you no longer plan to travel to India, no action is required. An unused eVisa simply expires. Note that no refund is available for an approved eVisa, as the government processing and our service have been completed.
We always recommend choosing a visa validity that gives you some flexibility. The 1-year multiple-entry e-Tourist Visa is a good option if your dates are not fully confirmed.
Yes. The e-Tourist Visa covers tourism, sightseeing, visiting friends and relatives, and attending social events such as weddings, religious ceremonies, and family gatherings. This is one of the most common reasons people apply for an India eVisa, and it is fully permitted.
There are no additional documents required specifically for attending a wedding. However, having your hotel reservation or the address where you will be staying (such as a family member's home) ready when you apply is helpful.
If you plan to stay longer than 30 days for an extended family visit, consider the 1-year multiple-entry e-Tourist Visa, which allows stays of up to 90 days per visit (180 days for US, UK, Canadian, and Japanese nationals).
Yes. Every traveller, regardless of age, needs their own individual eVisa to enter India. This includes newborns and infants. There is no exemption based on age, and children cannot travel on a parent's visa.
Each child must have:
Their own passport: valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival in India.
Their own eVisa application: completed by a parent or legal guardian.
Their own qualifying photo: meeting India's 2×2 inch square photo requirements. Photographing infants and young children to meet these specifications can be tricky, our photo validation tool will help ensure compliance before submission.
The eVisa fee for children is the same as for adults. When applying through VisaIn.in, you can submit applications for your entire family and manage them all from your account.
The e-Tourist Visa allows you to attend casual or informal business meetings, for example, meeting a potential partner over coffee, visiting a client's office for a brief discussion, or attending a networking event.
However, if your primary purpose of travel is business-related, you should apply for the e-Business Visa. Activities that require a business visa include:
Attending trade fairs or exhibitions as a participant or exhibitor. Establishing a business venture, joint venture, or industrial project. Recruiting staff or conducting interviews. Participating in technical or business workshops, seminars, or conferences (other than government-sponsored events, which require an e-Conference Visa). Purchasing or selling goods in a B2B capacity. Providing expert or specialist services to an Indian company.
The distinction matters because entering India on a tourist visa while conducting activities that require a business visa is a violation of your visa conditions. When in doubt, choose the e-Business Visa for full coverage, or contact us and we will advise you based on your specific itinerary.
You need the e-Medical Visa. This visa is specifically designed for foreign nationals seeking medical treatment at a recognised hospital or treatment centre in India.
The e-Medical Visa is valid for 60 days from the date of your first entry into India and allows up to three entries (so you can leave and re-enter if needed during treatment). It is available for treatments including surgery, organ transplants, traditional medicine (Ayurveda, Yoga, Siddha), and other medical procedures.
For companions: Up to two people travelling with the patient can apply for an e-Medical Attendant Visa. This has the same validity and entry conditions as the e-Medical Visa.
When applying, you may need to provide a letter from the hospital or medical facility in India confirming your treatment. Our team can guide you on the required documentation.
India is a major destination for medical tourism, with world-class hospitals in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad offering treatments at a fraction of Western prices.
Certain areas in India are classified as Restricted Area Permit (RAP) or Protected Area Permit (PAP) zones. These include parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Ladakh (certain border areas), the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (certain islands), Lakshadweep, and some areas along India's international borders.
An eVisa alone is not sufficient to visit these areas. You will need to obtain a separate permit from the Indian government, either a Restricted Area Permit or a Protected Area Permit, depending on the location. These permits can often be applied for through the Ministry of Home Affairs or local government offices. Some permits (for example, the Sikkim Inner Line Permit) can be obtained at the state border checkpoint.
The rules vary by nationality and specific area. Some restricted zones are completely closed to foreign visitors, while others require permits that are relatively easy to obtain.
If you plan to visit any of these regions, we recommend researching the specific permit requirements well in advance of your trip.
If your passport is lost or stolen after your eVisa has been approved, your eVisa becomes invalid. The eVisa is electronically linked to your specific passport number, and it cannot be transferred to a new passport.
Here is what you should do:
If you are still in your home country: Report the loss or theft to your local police and your country's passport office. Apply for a new passport. Once you receive it, you will need to submit a fresh eVisa application with your new passport number and pay the applicable fees again. Your previous eVisa cannot be reactivated or linked to the new passport.
If you are already in India: Report the loss or theft to the local police immediately and obtain a First Information Report (FIR). Contact your country's embassy or consulate in India to obtain an emergency travel document or replacement passport. Visit the nearest Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) to report the situation and get an exit permit to leave India. You will then need to apply for a new eVisa with your replacement passport if you wish to return.
Travel insurance that covers lost or stolen documents can help offset the costs of reapplication and emergency travel arrangements.

The final decision always rests with the Government of India, and factors such as nationality, travel history, and security considerations are beyond our control.
